What Is the Collision Mitigation Braking System Meant to Do?

It’s pretty simple. The CMBS alerts drivers when a collision is possible, or it may directly intervene in order to avoid a collision. Thanks to the sophistication of its sensing capability, the system is able to do this in one of three ways, depending on the threat level:

Stage One: Here the system just warns the driver visually and audibly if there is a potential risk of a collision with a pedestrian or another vehicle ahead.
Stage Two: This stage kicks in if the driver doesn’t respond to Stage One, or there is an increased level of risk. The visual and audible alerts will still occur, but the Collision Mitigation Braking System will also apply light braking.
Stage Three: In this case a collision is imminent. The alerts will still occur, but the system will apply strong braking, hopefully to avoid the collision, but at a minimum to mitigate the impact.

(It is important to understand what is the Collision Mitigation System designed not to do. This safety feature does not decrease the need of being alert at all times, nor can it detect all collision risks. The CMBS may skip Stage One, Stage Two, or both, depending on the relative risk of the collision.)
