What is a Tire Rotation?

Regular tire rotations will extend the life of your tires and boost the performance of your automobile. What is a tire rotation? It’s when you move your tires around (from the rear to the front or visa versa). Regularly rotating tires helps to keep any individual tire from wearing out before the others do. When was the last time you had your tires rotated? Whether you want to learn how to do a tire rotation yourself or have the expert service team at our service center do it for you, when you think of tires, think of Sussex Honda in Newton.

Why You Should Rotate Your Tires

Tires never wear out evenly. Typically the outside edges of your front tires show greater wear while the rear wheels often wear out more evenly. This means that if you don’t regularly rotate your tires, they could wear at different rates and you’ll replace them sooner. Also, regularly rotating your tires can provide better traction on Sparta Twp roads which will help keep you and your passengers safe.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Front and rear-wheel drive vehicles usually need their tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. All-wheel drive vehicles require it more frequently, usually every 3,000-5,000 miles, because tires are actively engaged and that causes them to wear faster. Sussex Honda encourages all Hackettstown drivers to review their owner’s manual for recommendations for their specific vehicle.

Correct Tire Position for Rotating Tires

  • FWD Tires: When working with FWD autos, you can move the front tires to the back of the vehicle in the same left and right positions. However, when it comes to moving the rear tires to the front, it’s a good idea to switch the right and left tires.
  • RWD Tires: When working with RWD tires, do the opposite. The rear tires should be rotated to the front of the auto in the same left and right positions. However, when moving the front tires to the rear, it’s recommended that you switch the left and right tire positions.

How to Rotate Your Tires

Want to rotate your tires yourself? You’ll need a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a good set of car jacks. Then, carefully follow these five steps:

  1. Set the parking brake as an extra safety provision.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but don’t take them all the way off just yet.
  3. Using the car jack, lift up one wheel and place the car jack stand beneath it.
  4. Remove all the tires and make sure they are filled to the optimal tire pressure that is recommended on the tire.
  5. Once filled to optimal levels, rotate them according to the appropriate pattern stated above for your type of tires.
  6. Screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as much as you can.
  7. Lastly, lower the car from the jack stand and use the lug wrench to completely tighten all the nuts. Note that it’s best to work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star-like pattern to ensure they’re evenly tightened and secure.
